Goals

  • To assist the rehabilitees to distance themselves from the war mentality and usage of drugs and direct them into a behavioural change through psychological methods in accordance with their economic, social and educationl levels.
  • To prevent them from being in combative mentality and getting addicted to dangerous drugs through the transformation of their living ambience and enviornment.
  • To impart them knowledge in vocational exposure so that they can make themselves available for empolyment opportunities after reintegrating into society.
  • Strengthening of the family bonds, making awareness on its importance and reciprocal responsibilities and uplifitment of the economic, social and welfare aspects of upkeeping the family unit.

Task

For the benefit of the rehabilitees, the government and non-governmental institutions have come forward to organize and conduct mental and physical development programmes (spiritual, counseling, yoga and various therapies), educational programmes (Tri Lingual and Information Technical knowledge and special day commemorations), aesthetic programmes (arts, drama, music and sculpture), sports programmes, leadership and personality development programmes in first six months as first step and thereafter vocational training and self-employment training programmes are conducted towards making themselves available to employment opportunities and also for raising their levels of livelihood following their reintegration into the society.

Vocational training courses for the rehabilitees are conducted by the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), The Sri Lanka Vocational Training Authority (VTA) and the consultants of the Bureau of the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation. Those who pass will be awarded a certificate of NVQ level III at the end of the course by the Tertiary and Vocational Literacy Training Centre (TEVC).

Follow up action on the rehabilitees reintegrated into the society

Socio Economic and Welfare Coordinating Offices for Rehabilitated Beneficiaries (SEWCORB) have been set up with a view of improving the socio economic and welfare activities of those rehabilitated with the objective of raising the living standards of their family units in need. These offices strive to carry out follow up action on the socially reintegrated rehabilitees whilst endeavoring to meet their needs.

Community awareness programs are conducted with the support of subjects experts (such as Community Correction Officers, NDDCB officers, Social Service Officers, councilors and Police Narcotic Officers) for Grama Niladari and the community.

Moreover the main goal of drug traffickers is to make school children who determine the future of the country addicted to drugs. These school children will be victimized of drugs as it will enable the drug traffickers to carry on drug trafficking. Accordingly awareness programmes have been conducted for the school children.
